HP’s new MagCloud service allows anyone with a computer and some design skillz to publish glossy magazines. This kind of self-publishing was the realm of hand-crafted zines. (Check out the cool new NYT slideshow+audio presentation too!). View the slideshow.

Hmm, I’m not sure if glossy zines are a good idea or not. Half the point of zines is that they’re homemade, although that being said I do get my zines done at a printer, but they are an actual zine printer!

Oh no! Does this make zines obsolete?
I hope not.

Zacery and Andrew – as Andrew rightly pointed out, the point of zines is that they are homemade (often also handmade). But these days, when digital publishing is getting so easy, it makes you rethink that “homemade” means, doesn’t it?

I think I still prefer the handmade aesthetic, but I see what you mean.
