Magic Eraser

A friend of mine visiting from Germany discovered the Magic Eraser in my cleaning cupboard. He was enthralled. Grime and grease just wiped away. I have often wondered what toxic substance this thing is made of. So I looked it up.

The Magic Eraser is made of melamine foam, a chemical that is as hard as glass when cured. By making it into a foam with very small open cells made of the melamine, the sponge basically rubs the dirt away mechanically, without chemicals.

“The apparently magical powers of the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, like many other methods, are based to a great extent on the principle of abrasion in which stubbornly adhering dirt is removed mechanically from the surface to be cleaned.”

Pretty cool! More info

The funny thing was that my German friend was so intrigued by this amazing American invention. It turns out that the Magic Eraser is made by BASF, a German company!
