Hiroshi Sugimoto :: Napoleon Bonapart, 1999

This caught my eye. A photograph of Napoleon (!?!) inserted into a photograph of an architectural space that was built during Napoleon’s time, but which still exists today. There’s more: the Napoleon in the photograph is a wax figure. My mind is spinning in this commentary on how we remember history, live with it, and try to reconstruct it—and the ways photography intersects with all of those.
